The 2026 FIFA World Cup has brought more than packed stadiums and energetic fan zones to North America.
As millions of supporters travel across the United States, Canada, and Mexico to follow their national teams, another trend has quietly gained momentum.Tinder has reported a noticeable rise in activity as international visitors and local users turn to the app to meet new people during the tournament.
The data highlights how one of the world’s biggest sporting events is also encouraging social connections beyond the matches.
International Visitors Fuel Tinder Growth

Fresh figures reported by The Independent show that Tinder’s activity has climbed sharply compared to the same period in June 2025. Across the United States, the platform has recorded more than a 15% increase in total users, while swipe activity has grown by around 25%.
The strongest increase came in successful matches, which jumped nearly 60% during the tournament. Similar patterns have also appeared in Canada and Mexico, the other FIFA World Cup co-hosts, showing that the event has created new opportunities for people to connect across borders.
Between June 11 and June 16, Tinder recorded a 47% increase in activity from international visitors across host cities compared with the same dates last year, even after adjusting for normal seasonal travel. Several cities experienced even higher spikes during specific World Cup fixtures.
Host Cities See Significant Spikes
Some match locations recorded particularly strong increases in Tinder usage. Monterrey, Mexico, saw international activity rise by more than 80% during the Sweden vs. Tunisia match at Estadio BBVA. Guadalajara followed with a 74% increase around South Korea’s game against Czechia.
Boston also experienced a notable boost, recording a 47% increase in Tinder activity during Iraq’s Group Stage match against Norway. At the same time, domestic users contributed to the overall trend, with activity across the United States rising 22% compared with June 2025.
Another feature gaining attention is Tinder’s Passport Mode, which allows users to connect with people in different cities or countries before arriving. New York-New Jersey, Los Angeles, and Miami ranked among the most searched destinations. Users from Great Britain, Brazil, Thailand, and Nigeria were among the most active groups looking for potential matches in the United States before traveling.
Football Culture Extends Beyond the Stadium
The increase in dating activity reflects the wider cultural exchange taking place throughout the tournament.
Scotland’s famous Tartan Army turned Boston into a lively celebration with bagpipe performances, group singalongs, and street festivities. Their impact became so significant that Boston and Glasgow agreed to pursue a twin-city relationship after the tournament.

Norwegian supporters also attracted international attention by performing their well-known Viking rowing celebration in New York City’s Times Square. England fans introduced many American supporters to the football anthem “Freed From Desire,” which quickly became a popular post-match celebration song.
Social media has also captured another side of the World Cup experience. Many European visitors have shared their first visits to well-known American restaurant chains, including Taco Bell, Waffle House, and Buc-ee’s, generating millions of views and adding another layer to the tournament’s cultural appeal.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup continues to influence far more than the game itself. Alongside record attendance and fan celebrations, the tournament has created a measurable rise in social interactions through Tinder.
Increased user activity, higher match rates, and growing interest in features such as Passport Mode show how global sporting events can encourage new connections while bringing different cultures together in cities across North America.
